2016 Recipients

Due to the generous donations given by our sponsors, friends and family, the Antonakos Foundation was able to award five (5) scholarships to deserving recipients, who truly live the Foundation’s mission every day. The Antonakos Foundation was honored to name Andrew O’Steen, Rachel Shaughnessy, Elizabeth Melton, Sloane Perkins and Meredith Butenoff as the 2016 scholars. The Foundation is very proud of each of these individuals and all that they have accomplished. They truly represent the living legacies of the Antonakos family. Rachel Shaughnessy

Rachel Shaughnessy has been awarded the SC Palmetto Fellows Award, AP Scholars with Distinction, Washington and Lee Book Award, National Honor Society, Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award for Academics.

While attending Greenville High School, Rachel was actively involved in Student Council, Beta Club, and French Club.  Her athletics include while attending include: Varsity Soccer; Cross Country and Swimming.

She has served our community by volunteering for Greenville City Council, International Center of the Upstate, Palmetto Girls State, Walk with Christ Leadership team and Buncombe Street UMC Youth Leadership Board.

Rachel started a very successful jewelry company named Vale Designs.

Rachel attends Wofford College and majoring in Health Science.

“Volunteering helps me realize that I am so blessed.  I believe I am called to give back to the community and be a servant to others in my actions.”

Sloane Perkins

Sloane Perkins has been awarded the National Honor Society, Beta Club, AP Scholar Award with Honors; YIG; YMCA CONA Delegate; SPECOL/SOCHUM Model United Nations 4th Place; 4th in State for film production; Greenville High Science Fair Outstanding Achievement Award; Greenville County Science Fair 3rd in Chemistry; Pulitzer Prize Committee – Best in Copy Editing

While attending Greenville High School, Sloane was actively involved in – Varsity Cheerleading; Junior Varsity Basketball; Youth in Government; Mock Trial club; Speech and Debate club; Book club; Raider Club; Student Council; Black History Month Program; Latin Club and Summer Enrichment Program

She has served our community by volunteering with the Greenville Humane Society; Girl Scouts; Holly Tree HOA, Greenville High Kiddie Cheerleading Camp; St Mary’s Catholic Church

Also, very notable about Sloane, she has published a book, Timmy the Mouse: Princess in Peril, which addresses bulling of others.  And she is the owner of Noble Ravens Press.

Sloane attends Clemson University and majoring in Political Science.

Andrew O’Steen

Andrew O’Steen has been awarded the Junior Marshall honor, AP Scholar with Distinction; Academic Letter/Bar. While attending JL Mann Andrew was actively involved in Student Council; Medical Leaders of Tomorrow; Greenville County Schools Inter High Council; School Improvement Council and National Honors Society.  His community involvement includes – City of Greenville Youth Commission and Good Future Corporation.

Andrew attends Clemson University and majoring in Civil Engineering.

Elizabeth Melton

Elizabeth Melton has been awarded AP Scholar with Honors, National Honor Society, Beta Club and USC Aiken Scholar.  Elizabeth was actively involved in the Greenville High Nautilus Yearbook and the school Varsity Swim Team serving as Captain her senior year.  She served her community through various activities at her church by being on the Diocesan Youth Leadership Committee; delegate to the Provincial Youth Networking meeting; Mentor and Student Leader, Acolyte Team, small group leader for Kononia, student leadership team for four years.  She also served as a tutor at YouthBase her senior year.

Elizabeth attends Furman University and majoring in Pre-Medicine with a minor in Spanish.

“…I will work hard to represent the values of the Antonakos Family…I will strive to make a difference in my campus community and help improve the lives of the less fortunate.”

Meredith Butenoff

Meredith Butenoff has been awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the ACE (Advocates for Character and Education).  She was awarded academic merit scholarships for each school that she applied to, but notably to mention – awarded the Furman Max Heller Scholarship which is given based on community service; Furman Hollingsworth Scholarship for her community service which includes her involvement with PAALS (Palmetto Animals Assisted Life Services) and she founded Made by Mer which supports individuals with chronic illnesses and resulting disabilities.  Meredith was inducted to the National Honor Society and Palmetto Fellows.  While attending Eastside High School, she was actively involved with the Beta Club and Youth In Government.  Also, to note Meredith has raised over $150,000 for charities in the Upstate.
